Uttaranchal or Uttarakhand is one of the newest additions to the Indian nation as a state created on the 8th of November 2000. Carved out of the earlier Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand comprises of 10 hill districts and is situated in the northwest portion of the erstwhile mother state.
Some of the greatest attractions of Uttarakhand are the hill destinations of Gharwal and Kumaon, the lands of Mountain Rivers, snow-capped peaks, thick forests, and rich fauna and flora. These destinations are ideal for a quiet getaway and they offer many residential options catering to these demands of visitors.
The state is also a trekker’s paradise. From glaciers to mountain tracks, there are various options for those wanting to be adventurous. The more challenging choices include activities like river-rafting, para-gliding, hand-gliding, mountaineering, skiing, and the like.
The state also has several possibilities for wildlife enthusiasts, the most famous of which is the Jim Corbett National Park that was the first National Park of India and is spread over an area of 520.82 sq km. Although the park is known most for its tigers, it also has many other animals and creatures from the avian as well as reptilian categories. It is immensely picturesque offering an eclectic mix of flora and fauna interspersed with streams, ranges and thick vegetation. The other park is the Rajaji National Park that was made by combining the Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla sanctuaries of the Shivalik range. The park is a favourite with bird lovers since apart from animals it houses over four hundred bird species, some of the rare ones being the Great Pied Hornbill, the Himalayan Pied Kingfisher and Fire-Tailed Sunbird.
In addition to the above, Uttarakhand is also the place of the Char Dham yatra or "four sacred spots journey” that comprises Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath and is considered the most sacred of all Hindu pilgrimages.
The most popular cities of Uttarakhand are Almora, Musoorie, Nanital, Ranikhet, Kausani, Binsar and Pithoragarh. Almora with its Koshi and Suyal rivers is nature at her best, and Mussoorie lies located 2,500 meters above sea level in the green Himalayan range, overlooking the Uttarakhand capital of Dehra-Doon that lies shimmering in the valley below. Ranikhet is a small town surrounded by mountains on three sides and once called the ‘City of 60 Lakes’. While most of these have disappeared over the years, the main attraction today is the Naini Lake around which the city is spread. Pithoragarh is the easternmost hill district of the state and is often described as a ‘Miniature Kashmir’ because of its pristine beauty and snowy splendor.
