Holiday in Kerela
Visit Today with Holiday City India
Described as ‘God’s Own Country’ Kerela is a state that has lived up to its name and reputation in every way possible. Located on the south west coast of India, the state is washed by the warm clear waters of the Arabian Sea and is infused with natural greenery in every nook and corner, Kerela was also chosen as one of the ten 'Paradises Found' by the National Geographic Traveler.
Although every city, town or village in Kerela has something special about it, one of the most common destinations is Aranmula that is a short distance from Trivandrum. Here you can witness the fascinating training of traditional dance forms including ‘Kalaripayattu’ and ‘Kathakali’, the mask-dance. If you are visiting during August or September you might be lucky enough to witness the famous snake boasts of Kerela taking part in the 4-day national Onam harvest festival and the Onam Boat Race. Watching these 30-feet long boats manned by 100 rowers each is an awe-inspiring sight and one that remains etched in the minds of all spectators for a long time to come.
Another place that can be visited is Kodumon. Here you can see centuries old churches and temples in the traditional Tranvancore style. Most of the houses of this region have detailed woodwork and etchings in their pillars and doorframes. There are many more such options – Munnar with its sprawling tea plantations, Topstation, a rich haven of plant and vegetation, and home to the Neelakurinji (Strobilanthus), the flower that blooms once in 12 years; Pakshipatalam, the favourite spot for trekkers and accessible only by trekking; the Palakkad Fort built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1776; Malampuzha with its famous thread museum where everything is made of thread, and the snake park that houses snakes like the Forsten's cat snake, several varieties of cobras and vipers, Indian rock python, kraits, and the wolf snake; Malampuzha , also known as the Vrindavan of Kerela with its famous sculptures and rock garden; Silent Valley, one of the least disturbed forests of Kerela with a rich tribal heritage; the Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary at Thekkady; Kottayam, the rubber town of Kerala; and Kovalam the beach resort.
One of the greatest pulls of Kerela today is the popularity of Ayurveda that has taken the world by storm. This school of healing evolved around 600 BC believes in the treatment of not just the affected part, but of the individual as a whole and stresses on harmony and balance within the core of an individual. Kerela has a host of different ayurveda therapies aimed at ailments and has received immense popularity. In addition to its curative aspects, Ayurveda is also used as a part of rejuvenation and relaxation regimens.
There are very few places in the world that offer you the spendour of the sea, plantations, rich vegetation, grand houseboats, wildlife, rare flora, dance and martial art traditions, and therapeutic relaxation all at the same time. While there are many who might think that such a place does not exist, anyone who has ever visited Kerela will know that such an earthly paradise does exist, and it exists at the southernmost tip of India, accessible to all who wish to access its beauty.
