Central India refers to states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Madhya Pradesh, lying at the very heart of the nation, is a place where culture meets nature, where forests run alongside beautiful architecture, and where flora and fauna thrive in a space of immense historical relevance. The region is a throwback on the days of the opulent Nizams and has numerous Mughul structures testifying to this historical encounter.
It also has several breathtakingly beautiful monuments and temples, some of the most famous ones being located at Khajaraho. These works have been etched out of hard rock to create relifs that remain in one’s mind long after they have been seen. They are representations of life in its many hues with a special focus on the doctrine and pleasure of love and lovemaking, attaining the impossible balance between the sensuous and the sublime.
The state has one thirds of India’s forests and therefore has developed many sanctuaries and parks that are home to many animals and birds, a large number of whom fly here during migration. The most well known sanctuaries here are the Kanha National Park and the Bandhavgarh Sanctuary, the latter known as the sanctuary of the elusive white tiger.
Other important cities are Panna, the country’s only diamond city, Sanchi with the famous Sanchi Stupa made by Emperor Ashok, and Chikrakoot, the ‘Hill of many wonders.’ The other important state of central India is Chattisgarh that came into being in November 2000, after being carved out of India’s (then) largest state of Madhya Pradesh. 44% of the state is under forest cover, and one third of the state population is tribal, with some of the tribes being the Bastar, the Korba, the Koriya and Dantewara. The state has several festivals and fairs and these are imbibed with a heady mix of colour, fun, spirituality, traditions, and centuries old tribal customs. In fact, even though there are other aspects to the state, the tribal aspect is a unique feature. Learning about these age-old rituals like the Ghotul or dormitory for unmarried boys and girls, the Gaita, Gunia & Siraha are truly fascinating experiences. The tribals are also known for their craft styles like the Bastara and Dokra metalwork.
Chattisgarh is home to some of the thickest forests in India, set alongside streams, rivers, caves and waterfalls. It has a rich wildlife and one can come across creatures as diverse as reptiles, bears, birds and panthers.
In an India fast developing and moving into the contemporary realm, Chattisgarh stands out as an example of old is gold, of the sanctity of traditional ways and the dignity of tribes that are fast disappearing from the face of our planet.
