Holidays in Andaman & Nicobar

Visit Today with Holiday City India

The Andaman & Nicobar islands that make up the singular Island state of India is a place of sandy beaches, a lazy stretched out coastline, swaying trees, clear water allowing glimpses of vibrant fish, enigmatic tribals, a rich underwater reservoir and fabulous flora and fauna – in short a place for the ideal beach holiday!

Located in the Bay of Bengal the best things about this group of 572 islands is that they are relatively isolated and imbibed with a sense of mystery that gets only reinforced by its tribal heritage and natural bounty. The clusters are made up of varying pieces of land masses, inhabited or otherwise, islets and rocks, making up a total length of almost 800 km.

One of the most popular Islands of this archipelago is the Jolly Buoy Island situated in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park and ideal for all kinds of underwater activities and a rich marine life. Other islands also catering to maritime preferences with huge doses of underwater coral gardens and awe-inspiring views of corals and marine life include the Cinque Island, Red Skin Island, and Havelock Island. A fascinating exception is the Barren Island, with the only active volcano in India and a crater rising from the sea. Other options are Corbyn's Cove and Chirya Tapu, ideal for lazing around in the warm sun; Radhnagar & Vijaynagar Beach, perfect for nature lovers and relatively un-interfered by urban influences, Karmatang Beach with its precious turtle-nesting ground, Harminder Bay Beach, and Ramnagar Beach.

The sandy beaches of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are also home to many reptiles and turtles of all varieties, like the Leather Back Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, who use the shores here to nest.

In addition to the above, the islands of this archipelago also have a rich sense of history, considering they were once used for convicting Indian prisoners. Of them, Ross Island was the capital of these Islands. For those interested in exploring this particular aspect of the Andamans, a visit to the Cellular Jail National Memorial at Port Blair is a must. In addition the lives of Paleolithic Islanders can be looked into at Phoenix Bay’s Anthropological Museum. While the islands have a Naval Marine Museum at Delanipur and a Zoological Museum looking at these areas specifically, the Forest Museum at Haddo offers an insight into forest activities through scale models and displays decorative wood pieces made up of Padauk, Marble, Peauma, Gurjan and Satin Wood.

The Andaman and Nicobar islands therefore strike just the right balance between pleasure, culture, relaxation and leisure. From the waves on the shore to the verdant foliage at the core, from the delectable cuisine to the rich historical heritage, this island state of India is a gem set in the midst of the sparkling waters of the Bay, a gem that must be experienced to be believed.
